White Rose Maths have been delivering 5 key Jigsaw twilights to Secondary schools around the country.
We have combined two of the courses with our new WRM Schemes: Explored (Secondary) session to create 2 full days of training.
We are pleased to offer you the option of booking two full days, at a reduced cost of £286.20 + VAT and ticket booking fee.
Day 1 – 12th March
WRM Schemes: Explored
Many secondary school pupils believe that they “cannot do maths”. Our secondary Scheme of Learning helps you teach for deep and lasting understanding by changing mindsets and building confidence as well as skills. This in-depth course explains the “small step” structure of the course, demonstrating how key concepts are interleaved throughout to strengthen learning and how teaching is supported through the use of key representations, questioning and embedding of reasoning and problem-solving at every stage. We also explore how the curriculum supports the demands of the new Ofsted framework, and the wealth of supporting resources (assessments, IWB files etc.) we provide to support the teaching of the scheme. How to plan from the scheme is also explored, allowing delegates the chance to share their ideas and compare to one of our own exemplar lessons.
Mathematical Talk & Questioning
Have you ever asked students to talk about their learning then found they quickly go off task? Getting students talking about maths can be difficult but it is an essential part of embedding learning. This session will help teachers put structures and routines in place in their classroom so that meaningful talk can take place. In addition, this course looks at how to enhance a teacher’s modelling and questioning skills and how to plan questions that challenge students and deepen their understanding. The session is practical, thought-provoking and equip teachers to put what they learn into practice the very next day.
Day 2 – 13th March
An introduction to Bar Modelling
Bar Modelling is a powerful tool for representing problems that is a key component of the teaching for mastery approach heavily utilised in some of the most mathematically successful countries in the world. Building on from concrete representations, this pictorial tool opens up understanding in many curriculum areas including number relationships, all aspects of proportional reasoning and algebra right up to simultaneous equations. This course will also explore how bar modelling can be used to make sense of – and therefore be able to solve – complex worded problems.
Reasoning & Problem Solving
Reasoning and problem solving have been high on the agenda since the most recent reform of GCSE in 2017. This very practical course examines how to develop these skills over the five years of secondary school, looking at the journey in reasoning from giving explanations through to developing formal proof, and how to support students at all levels of attainment to access and succeed in high-value problem solving questions. You will leave the session with ideas and strategies to implement from the very next day.
