WRM Schemes: Explored
Many secondary school pupils believe that they “cannot do maths”. Our secondary Scheme of Learning helps you teach for deep and lasting understanding by changing mindsets and building confidence as well as skills. This in-depth course explains the “small step” structure of the course, demonstrating how key concepts are interleaved throughout to strengthen learning and how teaching is supported through the use of key representations, questioning and embedding of reasoning and problem-solving at every stage. We also explore how the curriculum supports the demands of the new OfSTED framework, and the wealth of supporting resources (assessments, IWB files etc.) we provide to support the teaching of the scheme. How to plan form the scheme is also explored, allowing delegates the chance to share their ideas and compare to one of our own exemplar lessons.
Concrete manipulatives are fundamental to the powerful Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach and are a key resource in developing a deep understanding of maths for pupils of all ages. This hands-on course will focus on how concrete resources can be used to develop children’s conceptual understanding across all areas of the curriculum, from simple number operations up to complex procedures like completing the square. Building on the concrete, we consider how we can make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract ideas so pupils can truly master concepts, building on strong foundations.

Reasoning & Problem Solving
Reasoning and problem solving have been high on the agenda since the most recent reform of GCSE in 2017. This very practical course examines how to develop these skills over the five years of secondary school, looking at the journey in reasoning from giving explanations through to developing formal proof, and how to support students at all levels of attainment to access and succeed in high-value problem solving questions. You will leave the session with ideas and strategies to implement from the very next day.
Thinking through Variation
This session focuses on how teachers consider how the students in their classroom are learning and ensure all students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Focusing on variation, this thought-provoking session looks at how teachers can consider every aspect of a topic in order to develop strong foundations of understanding for their students. Covering many areas of the curriculum, the session focuses on the underlying structures behind the Mathematics and how to plan for these in a practical and accessible way.
