CPA

Concrete manipulatives are fundamental to the powerful Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach and are a key resource in developing a deep understanding of maths for pupils of all ages. This hands-on course will focus on how concrete resources can be used to develop children’s conceptual understanding across all areas of the curriculum, from simple number operations up to complex procedures like completing the square. Building on the concrete, we consider how we can make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract ideas so pupils can truly master concepts, building on strong foundations.


  

Reasoning and Problem Solving

Reasoning and problem solving have been high on the agenda since the most recent reform of GCSE in 2017. This very practical course examines how to develop these skills over the five years of secondary school, looking at the journey in reasoning from giving explanations through to developing formal proof, and how to support students at all levels of attainment to access and succeed in high-value problem solving questions.  You will leave the session with ideas and strategies to implement from the very next day.
