This session is specifically designed for Upper Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 practitioners who would like to develop their understanding of the journey of addition and subtraction of fractions. This will draw on powerful models and images and exemplify how these can be used to deepen pupils’ conceptual understanding of fractions. We will address key areas of difficulty and misconceptions often encountered in this area.

We will explore a number of different strategies when adding and subtracting fractions and encourage pupils to be flexible in their thinking. During the session we will be: adding fractions with different denominators and looking at how we add fractions with the lowest common multiple. We also will be subtracting fractions focusing on the bar model method as well as and adding and subtracting improper fractions and mixed numbers.
