A new approach to the primary science curriculum
What is White Rose Science?
White Rose Science takes the highly successful approach we pioneered with White Rose Maths and transfers it to the primary science curriculum. It uses a “small steps” approach to science teaching, and closely
follows the national curriculum for science for years 1 - 6. It gives specialist and non-specialist teachers a one stop solution as they help children develop scientific understanding and grasp scientific ideas.
Science, in a fun and logical way
White Rose Science teaches practical approaches to science and scientific language in a fun and logical way.
At the same time, it provides teachers with all the guidance and supporting materials they need to plan and deliver a high quality science education. Comprehensive training courses support the implementation of White Rose Science in schools.
Our schemes of learning provide full coverage of the national curriculum for science but don’t stop there. They also cover scientific questions around sustainability and the planet, and help children develop an empathy for the local and wider environment.
The science curriculum in bite-size bits
The key to the success of White Rose Science is our small steps approach. We break down the essential aspects of key stage science into easily digestible chunks.
Through experiment, practice and discussion, children gain core knowledge around:
- Scientific vocabulary
- ‘Working scientifically’ skills including systematic and careful observations and following practical scientific methods
- The gathering and interpretation of straightforward scientific evidence
- The use of everyday materials and scientific equipment to solve science problems
- Articulating scientific concepts and using five types of science enquiries
We believe that children should be taught science in a way that helps nurture an understanding of the value of scientific skills. We think science learning should be engaging and inspiring.
We’ve developed White Rose Science with those goals in mind.
Science teaching the easy way
Like all White Rose resources, our primary science curriculum is broken down from years into blocks and from blocks into easy, logical steps. That’s great for both children and their teachers:
- Our free scheme of learning covers the national curriculum for science with extra modules on sustainability
- Teachers who have used White Rose Maths resources will feel immediately at home with science equivalents
- Every small step includes notes and guidance for teachers, key questions and national curriculum links
- Notes highlight key vocabulary, practical ideas and factual knowledge for key learning points. Equipment is listed for every experiment
- Premium resources include a clear, easy-to-follow write-on worksheet for every small step. All resources provide opportunities for scientific discussion
The basic structure of each small step is the same, letting teachers and pupils approach every topic with confidence.
Pricing and release dates
The schemes of learning will be available free of charge, with supporting premium content available at an additional cost.
Resources will start to be released in early June and all autumn content will be online by the end of August, including the schemes of learning and a supporting worksheet for every small step. Spring content will be released between October and December, with summer materials added from February to April 2024.
Science CPD will also be available to book from September.
