Within this session, we explore different strategies to support ALL pupils to have the skills to reason and problem solve. The key elements of these two main aims of the National Curriculum are examined in detail.

We exemplify how different strategies can be easily embedded to promote problem solving in a range of mathematical contexts as well as tackle some of the main reasons why problem solving can be difficult for pupils. The session looks at different strategies that can be used to elicit reasoning and ideas that can be utilised to enable pupils to access a problem if they are struggling, as well as extend the thinking of pupils who need further challenge.
