Talk is vital in developing students’ understanding of mathematics. This course examines the importance of precise language in the classroom, both in terms of teacher modelling and expectations of student response.
Strategies for developing and retaining correct mathematical vocabulary are explored. In addition, we consider how to develop the environment for mathematical talk to ensure participation by all students. This includes examining our choice of questions and the styles of questioning that underpin and encourage meaningful dialogue.
