The White Rose Maths team love being kept super busy!
We are a group of teachers and maths specialists dedicated to developing maths education, and improving maths teaching in both Primary and Secondary settings. Our aim is to inspire everyone to love maths as much as we do! Here are some of the team who support the work of White Rose Maths.
Caroline HamiltonHead of White Rose Maths
My happiest maths moment so far… Seeing our schemes of learning and CPD courses come to life in the classroom.
Jess EastonHead of CPD
My happiest maths moment so far… Every time I struggle with a problem and eventually come up with a solution that works.
Beth SmithHead of Primary
My happiest maths moment so far… Successfully teaching a class how to solve and understand short division: place value counters saved my life!
Ian DaviesHead of Secondary
My happiest maths moment so far… Finally managing to convince my Y9 class that nought point nine recurring is equal to 1!
Kate HenshallMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… The power of concrete has blown me away, and being able to understand why two odd numbers make an even number and why three consecutive numbers added together will always be a multiple of three have been magical moments. Without using the powerful concrete manipulatives, I’d never have seen exactly why. Using concrete manipulatives to understand algebra was amazing!
Sam ShutkeverMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When I realised that the fraction bar is just the division symbol! This suddenly made fractions make much more sense.
Elaine GuzdekMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… My happiest maths moment was when I first realised the power in using place value counters for division... who knew? I love seeing the faces of children when they have success in maths and suddenly everything becomes much more accessible.
Hannah JonesMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… My happiest moments in maths are not only when I see the hugely rewarding benefits on my job, where pupils have a light bulb moment, or are simply enjoying being challenged in their everyday maths lessons: But when the roles are reversed and I learn from them! Some of the different ways our children think can blow your mind, and can tell us endless things about them as successful young mathematicians.
Sarah HowlettMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When I can develop an image with a child that helps them unlock their thinking around a mathematical concept. I find the CPA approach so powerful - it prompts so many of those 'lightbulb moments' that as teachers we love!
James CleggMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Having spent my own education being taught quick tricks and following step by step instructions, I love the way maths is now being taught: exploring the how and why. Plus, the first time I saw Bar Modelling blew my mind – how had I gone nearly 30 years having never seen them?
Michael GrangeMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When a pupil in my class read a ratio problem carefully for a minute, turned to the pupil sitting next to her and exclaimed, “We need to draw a bar model!”.
Jane BrownMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Those ‘wow’ moments in the classroom when the children discover the joy of maths for themselves and come rushing to show you what they have done and they leave the classroom still talking about it.
Julie MatthewsMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… The day after attending my first Bar Modelling course, we did some quite complex algebra with Year 3 - and they loved it!
Stephanie KirkMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I have loads, but it’s great when one of the team shows me something mind-blowing and I think, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ – things like using a bar model to multiply two fractions, or solving equations with cups and counters.
Mary-Kate ConnollyMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Realising that you can order fractions using the numerator as well as using the denominator. This blew my mind.
Simon BondMaths Specialist
Jenny BurrageMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Having been taught maths in a procedural way as a student myself, I have had so many WOW moments when I've realised the why behind the procedures. Being in a position where I get to share these wow moments, both in my own classroom and at training sessions, is always a happy maths moment!
Tim ChadwickMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Teaching a friend Bar Modelling in the sand on a beach. He thought it was the best thing ever and wished that he'd been shown its incredible properties in school. If you can't get to the beach, exploring it in the classroom is just as memorable.
Christina TurnerMaths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I love thinking about where Maths has come from. Did we create it? Did we discover it? It makes me feel happy to think that Maths has been a constant presence through all of time. Think of all of those great mathematicians - what we have already discovered and what's left to still discover! It's exciting!
Tony StaneffHead of External Initiatives (Trinity MAT)
My happiest maths moment so far… Those occasions when you teach a topic and in the middle of teaching you see a link to something that you have never seen a link to before. That’s why I love maths
Jennie GregoryOperations and Communications Manager
My happiest maths moment so far… Seeing the excitement of teachers arriving at one of our conferences and them greeting you with “I’m so excited about today!”. Being part of that buzz just gets better every time. It once brought a tear to my eye listening to a guest speaker explain the incredible difference that WRM had made in his severely deprived school.... there really is something special about seeing the passion for maths come to life!
Natasha McLoughlinOperations and Communications
My happiest maths moment so far… Being part of a team of mathematicians who have spread the word of White Rose Maths all around the world!
Jane RedheadOperations and Communications
My happiest maths moment so far… Having colleagues who helped my daughter to understand her maths homework.
Julie CampbellOperations and Communications
My happiest maths moment so far… Being a member of a team that is helping young people around the country to improve and enjoy mathematics.
