Meet the White Rose Maths team – we love being kept super busy!

We are a group of teachers and maths specialists dedicated to developing maths education and improving maths teaching in both Primary and Secondary settings. Our aim is to inspire everyone to love maths as much as we do! Here are some of the team who support the work of White Rose Maths.

Caroline Hamilton

Head of White Rose Maths
My happiest maths moment so far… Seeing our schemes of learning and CPD courses come to life in the classroom.

Jess Easton

Head of Training
My happiest maths moment so far… Every time I struggle with a problem and eventually come up with a solution that works.

Ian Davies

Head of Curriculum
My happiest maths moment so far… Finally managing to convince my Y9 class that nought point nine recurring is equal to 1!

Mary-Kate Connolly

Head of Resources
My happiest maths moment so far… Realising that you can order fractions using the numerator as well as using the denominator. This blew my mind.

Jane Brown

Lead Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Those ‘wow’ moments in the classroom when the children discover the joy of maths for themselves and come rushing to show you what they have done and they leave the classroom still talking about it.

Michael Grange

Lead Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When a pupil in my class read a ratio problem carefully for a minute, turned to the pupil sitting next to her and exclaimed, “We need to draw a bar model!”.

Christina Turner

Lead Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I love thinking about where Maths has come from. Did we create it? Did we discover it? It makes me feel happy to think that Maths has been a constant presence through all of time. Think of all of those great mathematicians - what we have already discovered and what's left to still discover! It's exciting!

Sarah Howlett

Lead Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When I can develop an image with a child that helps them unlock their thinking around a mathematical concept. I find the CPA approach so powerful - it prompts so many of those 'lightbulb moments' that as teachers we love!

Liam Petitt

Primary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When I hear children using the language I’ve modelled to question, or even better, to help each other. Children helping each other understand really makes me happy.

Natalie Booth

Primary Specialist

Beth Smith

Primary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Successfully teaching a class how to solve and understand short division: place value counters saved my life!

James Clegg

Primary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Having spent my own education being taught quick tricks and following step by step instructions, I love the way maths is now being taught: exploring the how and why. Plus, the first time I saw Bar Modelling blew my mind – how had I gone nearly 30 years having never seen them?

Louise Collinson

Primary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I have so many! The main one is when I realised how effectively the bar model can be used to support understanding with so many different mathematical concepts.

Paul Flack

Primary Specialist

Amy How

Primary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I think my happiest maths moments come from students I have taught over the years. I especially loved the "I love maths now!" or "Can we do more maths?" comments made to me from those anxious students who were not confident in maths and disliked the subject prior to being in my classroom.

Sam Shutkever

Primary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… When I realised that the fraction bar is just the division symbol! This suddenly made fractions make much more sense.

Imran Mohammed

Secondary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… The realisation of maths being like one big jigsaw and how I can play my part in ensuring each piece fits together when teaching students.

Jenny Burrage

Secondary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Having been taught maths in a procedural way as a student myself, I have had so many WOW moments when I've realised the why behind the procedures. Being in a position where I get to share these wow moments, both in my own classroom and at training sessions, is always a happy maths moment!

Simon Bond

Secondary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Proving that the product of two negative numbers is positive.

James Hunter

Secondary Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I love teaching algebra with graphing software. I recently over-heard one of my year 11s explaining to another student what it actually means to solve a quadratic equation using a sketch of graph. I was very proud!

Tara Stuttard

Secondary Specialist

Stephanie Kirk

Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… I have loads, but it’s great when one of the team shows me something mind-blowing and I think, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ – things like using a bar model to multiply two fractions, or solving equations with cups and counters.

Tim Chadwick

Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… Teaching a friend Bar Modelling in the sand on a beach. He thought it was the best thing ever and wished that he'd been shown its incredible properties in school. If you can't get to the beach, exploring it in the classroom is just as memorable.

Kate Henshall

Maths Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… The power of concrete has blown me away, and being able to understand why two odd numbers make an even number and why three consecutive numbers added together will always be a multiple of three have been magical moments. Without using the powerful concrete manipulatives, I’d never have seen exactly why. Using concrete manipulatives to understand algebra was amazing!
Julie Matthews

Julie Matthews

Freelance Specialist
My happiest maths moment so far… The day after attending my first Bar Modelling course, we did some quite complex algebra with Year 3 - and they loved it!

Jonathan Southern

Resource Creator
My happiest maths moment so far… This summer alone has a top three. My favourite was seeing Jupiter’s moons and Saturn’s rings. I also loved using Pythagoras’s theorem for 4D hypercubes and learning the proof for “negative x negative = positive.”

Tony Staneff

Head of External Initiatives (Trinity MAT)
My happiest maths moment so far… Those occasions when you teach a topic and in the middle of teaching you see a link to something that you have never seen a link to before. That’s why I love maths!
Jane Redhead

Jane Milner

Operations and Communications - Senior
My happiest maths moment so far… Having colleagues who helped my daughter to understand her maths homework.
Julie Campbell

My happiest maths moment so far… Being a member of a team that is helping young people around the country to improve and enjoy mathematics.

My happiest maths moment so far… Watching my daughter use the White Rose Maths schemes, her confidence and love for maths has grown tremendously over the last 4 years.
