For primary school children, maths is all about building solid foundations. That's where Fluency Bee can help. Fluency Bee is a structured teaching programme designed to give children confidence with numbers through varied and frequent practice. It's an easy way to build number sense and develop a range of core skills in maths.
Fluency Bee brings maths to life. Key representations are used throughout the programme to help children build visual images, and there's lots of emphasis on mathematical talk, games and a hands-on, practical approach. In short, it makes learning maths simple and fun - for children and teachers.
The best way to develop maths fluency is frequent practice. Fluency Bee consists of a daily 15-minute lesson separate from the main maths lesson. Fully animated PowerPoint slides bring core skills to life, with teaching notes that emphasise key learning points and highlight important connections.
Then there's an optional fluency-based task to follow each lesson. Together, they help build children's confidence in working with numbers and help them to understand key number facts by building conceptual understanding.
Initially aimed at children in key stage 1, Fluency Bee can be used with the whole class every day, or with small groups who may need a little extra help from time to time. A key stage 2 version will be available next year.
So what's different about Fluency Bee? As with all White Rose resources, it's all about breaking maths concepts into small, easy-to-digest steps.
For teachers and classroom assistants, everything you need to build mental fluency in maths is right there in the programme. There's no need to go anywhere for extra resources. Each block starts with a short guidance slide which highlights key learning points and important connections for developing fluency. If needed, there's more information in the notes underneath each slide.
The structure is simple, leaving teachers free to get on with teaching - there's no need to read pages of supporting guidance. After all, Fluency Bee is designed to make your life easier.
Every one of the 15-minute fluency sessions is taught using high-quality animated PowerPoint slides.
The support offered by Fluency Bee doesn't stop there. There's an optional fluency-based task for every small step for extra practice, and two pages of fluency questions help build confidence.
Taken together, the animated slides and supporting material create fluency sessions that children enjoy and teachers enjoy delivering.
