When students struggle with the core maths curriculum at key stage 3, teachers need a more tailored approach to encourage progress. In response to feedback from teachers, we’ve produced an alternative curriculum for KS3 maths that builds confidence by focusing on essential concepts and tackling them in small logical steps.
Our secondary support scheme aligns with our core scheme, so students can seamlessly move between the two. For example, if a student struggles with fractions, they can use the support scheme to slow down and work at a pace that aids understanding. If they are confident with area, they can rejoin the main scheme for that block and move more quickly through the content.
In effect, using the main and support schemes together creates a bespoke learning pathway for every student.
Our secondary support schemes for KS3 maths are built with students and teachers in mind. There is a greater focus on fluency and creating understanding through practice. The topics are in the same order as the main scheme of learning, so students are studying the same subjects as their classmates. The look and feel of resources are familiar, so teachers can get on with teaching straight away.
Students don’t all learn at the same pace. But lower attaining children can still become confident in key topics with extra support and practice.
That’s where our secondary support schemes for KS3 maths come in. They give teachers the resources they need to help lower attaining students create firm foundations of mathematical knowledge.
How do we know teachers want this kind of resource? They’ve told us. The development of our secondary support schemes are driven by teacher feedback.
Like all White Rose Maths resources, our secondary support schemes for KS3 maths are broken down into easy, logical steps. They support students and teachers with:
Our premium resources include a supporting write-on worksheet for every small step, giving teachers ready-made, high quality questions to use with their class.
All our resources align with the national curriculum, and our secondary support schemes are no exception.
They run alongside our own schemes of learning, but focus on building confidence through practice in small, logical steps. The topics covered are the same as in the main KS3 maths scheme, but the content is less challenging.
Our twin aims are to enthuse students and make life easier for teachers. Each small step comes with notes and guidance for teachers, including practical ideas they can implement in the classroom. They also suggest possible sentence stems to help develop mathematical knowledge and understanding.
The support schemes - as with all our schemes of learning - are free of charge. Paid for premium resources also include access to bespoke worksheets. Again, these will be less demanding than those in the main curriculum, and are designed to cement new ideas and concepts and build confidence.
The support schemes will be free of charge, and the supporting premium resources will be included as part of any secondary subscription. Access to individual year groups will be available within the existing individual subscriptions.
Autumn resources for Years 7, 8 and 9 will start to be released in early June and all autumn content will be online for the start of September. Spring content will be released between October and December, with summer content following from February to April 2024.
